I hope to finish at least the first volume of this family saga. Quratulain Hyder's style is truly inimitable in the way it incorporates a smorgasbord of 'hyperlocal' ( West/North West UP), historical details without sounding too scholarly. Textured, layered, rambling, vivid recollections. History + fantasy + dollops of nostalgic musings. A great introduction to Western UP's qasbati milieu.

Reading this and just wondering that when qh decided to be a novelist, socialsciences lost a great historian. What a detailed and very interesting history of the Haider family starting right from their ancestor Hazrat Zaid bin zain ul Abidin but I couldn't sum it up as you have and she seem to have written it in the quaint way her fiction has been written.

It's quite challenging too , largely due to the layers of socio-cultural details.
