Their strong emotional reactions limit their ability to access and apply coping strategies...This reaction is confusing for the children and causes more fear and distorted thinking, which in turn causes anxiety to spiral. They tend to react to ambiguous stimuli as negative and interpret benign information as a threat. They see danger where there is no danger. They tend to be hypervigilant and automatically imagine that if something bad has even a remote chance of happening, it will happen" (7).
