I like the description of and solution to Alexander Henry's injuries to the tendons in his leg, termed "snowshoe evil." "The usual remedy, according to Henry, was to lay a piece of burning wood on the affected part and leave it there until the flesh was burnt to the nerve. Although Henry claimed that he had seen this treatment used successfully on other people, he 'did not think proper to make upon myself."' (21)
