I couldn't settle on any audiobook and for some reason bethought myself of when I read UTC on Forgotten Classics so long ago. I stripped out the intros and commentary (knowing them all too well) and am relistening. Uncle Tom's Cabin once a year. It hits the spot. Evidently!

At this moment what I love most is poor Topsy who feels she'll never be worthy of love unless her skin was peeled off so she was white. No wonder she is bad all the time. Then there is Miss Ophelia, the New Englander, who is good at preaching about the evils of slavery while cringing at the idea of even touching Topsy. The transformation of both is beautifully touching and, of course, makes an excellent point.

The sign of a great book. I'm inflicting excerpts on my long suffering husband. But to do him justice, he is laughing in the right places.
