"If you two are done raping each other, I'd like to go." Seriously, is this word usage necessary?

The bolded text is really annoying.

Ugh, this is the second book I've read that makes an almost joke using rape. Really?? "There were pictures of us making out, basically raping each other in public. It was very embarrassing."

What's with all the bolded text and I'm just talking about the first chapter.
