I'm on page 67 of 256. It's not good. I'm going to reread the description/summary on the back and reviews because this just isn't it. The writing isn't immersive and it doesn't make the reader feel anything. I've been writing in the margins, just nonsense really. Casual racism, but Ig that was the time. We're in 1950s and 60s. A lot of jumping around and names and relations that mean nothing. Idk, why was this writte

FINISHED. Movies: "Phantom from Space", Carol Reed's "The Third Man". This was a two star for me. Some of the stories seemed unnecessary. Some of the sentences were run ons or just a bit confusing. I just wanted something more engaging and raw. Although there are tough topics discussed it all feels detached. I know our narrator is a child, so Roy doesn't understand everything, so it falls a little flat.

There were two weird stories that were from Roy's father's pov, that didn't include Roy, i didn't like that. This collection could've been a lot better if it seemed like more thought was put into the order of the stories and also some could've been cut.It just doesn't seem intentional and that's bothersome. Some stories feel nostalgic, or truly like a unaware child is telling them and those are good, but some fall flat

(125)(137 and 153)-movie references. Not sure how I feel about all the random time jumps, it's not a big deal, but I don't think I like it. I suppose if the stories were in chronological order this would just be a novel and I'm guessing the author didn't want to do that. I don't think all of the stories are meant to be figured out or mean something. They're just snippets of a childhood. The collection grows on you.

162 of 256. This collection of short stories started out unbelievably bad. There was no cohesiveness and it definitely felt like a 1 star, I even looked at reviews. However, as we've gotten farther in all the names being thrown at you make more sense because it's like you're a Chicago kid. If these were written differently they would just be diary entries. I think I'd prefer an actual novel, probs from a dif author.
