As far as books set in WW2/Weimar go - this one feels wholly unique. The last chapter of the first 'book' in particular is a masterpiece. It is easy to identify Albert Camus' influence - the narrator is unbelievable but serves to reveal the absurdity of normal people by existing alongside them. In many ways this book feels like a spiritual successor to The Stranger, but more explicitly transgressive and German.
