Her mother was the wisest person Lida knew and also the most annoying. The village women teased Lida that her mother was the most ill-equipped farmwife. She was perfectly tempered, never lashing out..Why could she not have a regular mother as her friends in the village? Reading and writing in four languages was not a fruitful skill for a farmer's wife.
