Ooooh! Fun!! :-D I love when I can kind of enjoy two sets of characters at once this way.

Me too, though I usually encounter it in fairy tale or classic lit retellings, where the fairy tale characters are much more ambiguous (who IS the Goose Girl, really?!) or the classic characters are sometimes rendered unrecognizable after shifting to a modern context.

This is, I think, the first time I've read a book where an author is so well-versed in fanfic and fandom that, even though the characters aren't Jaime and Brienne, you get a crystal clear palimpsest of the fandom versions underneath the book's characters. (Also, there is so much fun made of the last season of Game of Thrones. Also also, the hero fist-pumps when they're on a road trip and there's only one bed because he writes fanfic and that's his second-favorite trope. :D)
