What would the art of rhetoric be without the tales handed onto us by the poets of the past? Aren’t these tales like a rich mine from which a practiced orator can fashion both weapons and ornaments if he knows how to work the metal expertly? Indeed, wouldn’t the lessons of philosophy seem flat and indigestible if expressed without images and allegories taken from the world above?
