Again I am struck with the similarity of writing styles with Mark Twain--tongue in cheek exaggeration and understatement. The first skirmish many of our characters experience with the French is really a comedy of errors (if lives weren't lost) with neither army knowing what they are doing, communication being pretty much non-existent and exploits being greatly exaggerated (or outright lies) in reports to command.

We are now back in Moscow and St. Petersburg learning more about the at home adventures and misadventures of our warriors. The story remains interesting and readable, but the book is so heavy, my arthritic wrist begs for a break.

I then returned to War and Peace During this next 50 pages, we see our soldiers return to Moscow after a disastrous several battles with the French. But the Russians chose to see the defeat as the fault of a few of their Generals, and instead to celebrate the actions a the normal enlisted man. So, resumption of the normal parties, feasts, and balls could go on being given in honor of this one man.

The early part of the war continues to be characterized by inept arrogant officers, and eager cavalry/ infantry. Napoleon is much better at strategy than this early German/ Prussian general who has started leading the eastern forces.

This section of the book begins back in Russia where the dance of finding the marriageable young people mates. It is a definite contrast to the battlefield in the last section.

This book is surprisingly more readable than I thought. I have to admit I was warned--I should be keeping an annotated list of characters--they are confusing, not just because there are so many of them, but also because almost every character has title, first name, last name, and nicknames. But, that is just too much work. I'm taking it slow, though. The print is really fine and makes me and my eyes tired.

They have now had their first skirmish with the French which is described with beautiful accounts of the natural setting, counterbalanced by the mud the army is slogging up, as well as tongue in cheek humor worthy of Mark Twain.

This book is so long and the print so fine that I thought it was better for my eyes as well as my focus that I thought it should be consumed in thin slices (like a good fruitcake.) In this slice the young men are off to war. Their women mourn and worry while the men are off on a 1000 mile march to reach Russia.

It has started at the parties and homes of ruling class Russia, amid speculation about Napoleon's next moves, his predicted success or failure and some people preparing to join the military.

I know, I know. Lord only knows how many years it will take and if I'll even finish before I die. It has started in the drawing rooms and parties of the rich. The topic of discussion is of Napoleon and the prospect of war. Some seem to think if you ignore it--opt out--it will go away. Others believe that Russia is honor bound to step in and become Europe's stabilizing factor.
