Ben Beauchemin Does this book require a familiarity with Heidegger, or can you jump right in?

Mandel I would say you could read it without much background, but you should at least read “The Origin of the Work of Art” first: get it from the horse’s mouth before turning to commentary.

Mandel P.S. if you’re looking for something introductory on Heidegger’s philosophy of art I’d say Hubert Dreyfus’s essay “Heidegger’s Ontology of Art” in A Companion to Heidegger, and Julian Young’s book Heidegger’s Philosophy of Art are better places to begin. Less referentially dense than Iain’s book, and more geared to students.
