Liking this a lot so far damn. Contrasting positions of politicians to their context and available options is so illuminating.

"The occupation of the tropics by Europeans need not harm the wellbeing of the indigenous, which thus far has indeed not been the case. Moreover, savages can only be awarded a restricted respect of their right to the land. The higher culture has the higher right. Not the conquest but the cultivation of the soil justifies its use."

Wonder when social democracy turned away from colonialism. After decolonization?

On the intensive instead of extensive development of international trade:

"Of the total British export in 1895, 75% went to foreign countries and 24% to colonies. Of these, all British possessions in West and east-africa accounted for less than 1%, while Germany's part exceeded 10%."

Like Michael Heinrich for our times, Bernstein starts by separating historical materialism as a general logic of development from its practical applications as passed down by Marx. The first is a matter of science, ie it can be argued and proven, while the second are contingent value judgements and don't necessarily hold true outside their concrete situation.

According to the introduction, Bernstein's faith in orthodox interpretations of marxism (if not of Marx per se) was shattered by 2 factors: 1) the publiciation of Capital Vol 3, which to him failed completely due to the Transformation Problem, and 2) the "apocalyptic" outlook presented by most marxists, which could be summarized as "après le deluge, nous".

Very hyped to get into this.

"We should put all theoreticians in a room and let them devour each other"

Fine proposal

T Any strong opinions on revisionism? I remember reading a book on Nordic social democracy which said that their model proved Bernstein correct

David Man 9 times out of 10 catch me about somewhere and I'll either be revising or thinking about revising

No but seriously I don't find much merit in "revisionism" as a category (and even less in "anti-revisionism"). Unless political theory is applied concretely, or otherwise proven in practice, it's no more reasonable than the bible. The fact that the development of actually existing socialism can't be understoof from a "antirevisionist" viewpoint without degenerating into silly conspiracy theories shows we need to have few fundamental principles and very pragmatic, flexible tactics. I concur wrt Nordic countries and social democracy in general: it worked/works as long as it did because it responded to real possibilities that were given externally. Having dropped extraparliamentary struggle (which once was a normal tool in the socdem toolbox) it's up to today's communists and workers' parties to pick up where they left off.
