Thus far, the book is primarily quotes from Southern secessionists as they reinforce each other's optimistic views on the future of slave societies. It is a stark example of believing in what you want to happen as opposed to analyzing what is likely to happen. It is of little consolation to find out that willful ignorance is not a 21st century invention.

In the convention drafting the Confederate Constitution, there was a debate on whether states which had outlawed slavery could apply to join the Confederacy. That the drafters thought such applications were a possibility shows a stunning lack of self-awareness with regard to how they were viewed by the rest of the world. Falling into a similar pit of self-imposed ideological isolation is one of my own worst fears.
