We had a fricasee of rabbits and chickens, a leg of mutton boiled, three carps in a dish, a great dish of a side of lamb, a dish of roasted pigeons, a dish of four lobsters, three tarts, a lamprey pie (a most rare pie), a dish of anchovies, good wine of several sorts, and all things mighty noble and to my great content."

March 9: Up, and to the Tower; and there find Sir W. Coventry alone, writing down his journal, which, he tells me, he now keeps of the material things; upon which I told him, and he is the only man I ever told it to, I think, that I kept it most strictly these eight or ten years; and I am sorry almost that I told it him, it not being necessary, nor may be convenient to have it known.

Always thought Pepys was an erudite man of letters, but reading his diary I can't help but imagine that if he was alive today he'd been an insanely horned up Raytheon executive who spends his days posting and obsessively watching movies, always just on the verge of getting me tooed.

"23 January: So to my wife’s chamber and got her cut my hair and look my shirt, for I have itched mightily these 6 or 7 days, and when all comes to all she finds that I am lousy, having found in my head and body about 20 lice, little and great, which I wonder at, being more than I have had I believe these 20 years. I did think I might have got them from the little boy, but they did presently look him, and found none"

Not really reading this so much as just reading the entry a day from that one website. In ten years or so maybe I'll be able to claim that I've read most of it. Saw an entry recently where he couldn't find his chamber pot late at night and shat twice in the chimney, tonight his wife accuses him of cheating and attacks him with a hot iron poker.
