She was his and tonight had only confirmed his feelings for her. It was almost impossible to believe he was here with her. Not long ago he’d been trying to figure out a way to simply say hello to her without breaking into a nervous sweat. Now he knew they were meant to be together.

Out of the corner of his eye, Scott saw a flash of unmistakable red hair duck behind one of the counters in the outer office area. His entire world tilted on its axis. What the hell was Michaela doing here? Only a glass wall separated her from a man with a gun. He forced himself not to look in her direction. He couldn’t let this POS know anyone else was here.

She was different. Everything he was starting to feel for her scared the shit out of him because he didn’t quite understand what was happening to him. Michaela was like his 67’ Mustang. He’d worked a long time to get her and the thought of losing her left a hole inside him. He could get used to waking up to Michaela every morning. Much too easily.

He shook the doctor’s hand then headed toward Michaela. His gut clenched as she strode toward him. Taking her to the hospital was the last thing he’d ever wanted to do and definitely not on their first date. Even in death his father was f-ing with his life. But when she’d offered, he simply hadn’t been able to say no. Her offer had been completely sincere.

For once in his life, he wished he was a little more charming. He’d never needed words in the bedroom but he wanted to somehow tell her how beautiful she was, how much it touched him that she’d kissed his hideous scars. Everything he thought of sounded stupid though. Silence was definitely the best option.

As he clenched his fists at his side, Scott bit his tongue because if he didn’t, he’d deck the sheriff.

When he glanced at her, he found her staring at him with a curious expression on her face. For the first time in over a decade he felt like a randy teenager with a crush. What the hell was he supposed to talk to her about? His chance was finally here and he didn’t want to screw it up. He cleared his throat.

“My friend Michaela tells me you’re her new-ish neighbor.” He blinked as Darby’s words settled in. Michaela had talked about him? “Uh, yeah.” “You like living out on the lake?” He nodded, trying to find his voice. He didn’t have a problem talking with women. Ever. Until Michaela. Even hearing her name got him twisted up.
