Blackie struggles with what he thinks is cool and rebellious and being a responsible person.He isn't even nice. It is almost like he has a split personality. I suppose he is like many teenagers who want to seem cool and aloof and want their independence but don't want to have to exert too much energy to get it i.e. getting a real job etc. He wants everything the easy way but he makes it all so hard.

Blackie sat with the other workmen in the distant seats of the bleachers where cigar and cigarette smoke fouled his clothing and turned the air so blue and heavy that it was hard for him to breathe. But he liked this. The fight seemed to him an example of the way life should be, the action clearly determined, the goal known and capable of being obtained...

This book is a coming of age story. Blackie's voice seems like Ponyboy in The Outsiders to me.(although I still need to read the book but it is definitely like the movie adaptation) I am enjoying this so far.
