It's been a really long while since I read this book, haha. I was around ten or eleven when I first read this, and while I have faint memories of plot, I'm pretty sure I didn't understand it as well as I could've. But yeah. The thing with Mel is that on one hand, she's right—no one helped her when they should have. Everyone turned a blind eye. And at the same time, no one can help you if you don't ask for it.
