I think one ought to read nothing but books that bite & sting. If the book we r reading does not wake us up w/the blow of a fist against the skull, then why r we reading that book? So that it’ll make us happy? My God, we would be happy even if we had no books. No, we need those books that affect us like a misfortune, that cause us a lot of pain, like the death of someone whom we loved better than ourselves

My relation to writing & my relation to ppl r unchangeable in my being, not in temporary relations. For my writing I need seclusion, not “like a hermit,” that would not be enough, but like a dead man. Writing, in this sense, is a deeper sleep, ergo, death; & just as u will not & cannot drag a dead man fr his grave, so u will not & cannot drag me to my desk in the night

as if we were cast out in the forests, cut off fr all human beings, like a suicide; a book must be the ax for the frozen sea in us.
