In writing The Invention of Wings, I was inspired by the words of Professor Julius Lester, which I kept propped on my desk: "History is not just facts and events. History is also pain in the heart and we repeat history until we are able to make another's pain in the heart our own."

... we were both in Daniel's lion's den, and God had left us to it. I said, "Where's all that delivering God's supposed to do?"
He snorted. "You're right, the only deliverance is the one we get for ourselves. The Lord doesn't have any hands and feet but ours."
