All the Lovecraft references are simultaneously making me want to read his books AND avoid them like the plague - or like a giant racist tentacle monster.

Is there no end to Jemisin’s brilliance? Every perspective feels so authentic, from Brooklyn’s empowered Black council woman to Bronca’s Native artist to Aislyn’s conservative and repressed white girl. I feel particularly seen in Aislyn’s family, the oppressive, restrictive upbringing hitting home. How does Jemisin put herself in the shoes of such wildly different people?
