This far the Averoigne stories are disappointing. Predictable but in the tired sense of an uninteresting tale, written as usual for CAS with unprosaic language. The effective use of formulaic stories is absent in these tales. However, the other stories are rightly considered classics. CAS is better able to convey horror through decadent, baroque language than any of his peers.
