Wait, what? *rereads passage* 😶 The hero’s superpower is turning into a giant warrior hybrid of Avatar + Incredible Hulk, with a Deadpool sword arm. Yup! He’s blue. Yup! He’s angry & giant. Yup! Sword becomes a literal appendage to his body. 😑 I can’t take much more. I knew the hero had shifting ability, but I thought he was a Cheysuli wannabe or were-critter or whatever. This is just dumb.

Brisbois is the only character who interests me. Why does he serve his demented half-brother? How can he justify what he’s done at Hugh’s behest if he disagrees with it? What’s his ultimate goal? Poor guy. He’ll probably end up dead because he’s not one of the heroes in the other books. 🙄

Why am I still reading this soporific blandfest? It’s like reading a textbook about how it feels to watch paint dry. I get more emotionally invested with SportsCenter, ffs.

As an awkward X-Men loving kid, I desperately wanted to be a badass fire-mutant…so I wondered if the premise of this book would rekindle those idle plotbunnies of childhood. But it’s not rekindling shit. It’s just putting me to sleep because nothing is happening. MOVE ON, already…

See, this is why I usually dislike the fated-to-mate/reincarnated/avatars-of-dead-beings romances—lazy writing. Since they’re fated mates (or whatever this paranormal stuff is) we don’t have to see them falling in love, let alone any legit tension or personality from the MCs. 🙄 I’d not have bothered if I’d known this was the love-fulcrum. Zzzz…

‘Regardless of the unexplainable things going on, no matter the strangeness of the request, this was his king. Obedience was a foregone conclusion, even if the methods of executing such a task were questionable. “Aye, Sire,” he said, with a bow of his head. “I am at your service.”’ ….Yup, toddle off & kill that feudal lord with magical powers & demonic allies. What could possibly go wrong? 🙈
