I've lucid dreamed once or twice in my life, and was too caught up in the novelty of it to interact with any of the other "characters."

I often realize I'm dreaming at some point. Especially if I'm doing something I would know better than to do in real life.
Whenever I'm lucid enough to think 'hey, I can ask my dream characters things and get Important Insights!', the dream contrives to keep everyone away from me.
Interesting! Maybe your subconscious is protecting you from the disappointment of *not* getting important insights.

The protagonist in this already had the "maybe I'm not trying because if you don't try you can't fail" insight.
