So, Tsorreh's adjustment reminded me of threshold sickness from Darkover. The real world inspiration for the cultural elements we encounter is often evident, but not annoyingly so. There is enough reweaving to keep things interesting. And, I have to keep reminding myself that there wouldn't be a story if everything went well. I wonder what happened to Shadow Fox.

Not based on Western Europe, but the middle east, it seems. I find myself thinking of Masada. The names make me think of Hebrew a bit. So would Gelon be inspired by Rome? I also like the focus on a woman, although she is not telling the story.
