Coincidentally, I was reading a completely different type of book a couple of days ago when dodos came up. As far as scientists can tell, they were actually reasonably svelte birds. Their closest living relatives are absolutely gorgeous. I can't do a link here but try an image search on 'Nicobar Pigeon'.
