how is the point of view in this book ? is it objective and realistic, or orientalist-y ? im guessing its not from an islamic/spiritual perspective, just more academic ?

Yes I'd say more academic, on the orientalist side I would definitely say that a sliver of it exists considering the author is very secular but it's not that much, so I would watch out for that, but it doesn't extend to civilisation rather moreso religion so if you're just looking for insights into states then it's all good
