Day 1, Edinburgh Book Festival - Met Xiaolu Guo, a fiercely intelligent author who cites Duras, Genet, Sartre, Vian, Barthes, Calvino, Nabokov and the Beat Generation as her Western inspirations. Fascinating talk about national identities, translation, whether art [especially Chinese art] should be political, and the intellectual loneliness and prejudices when she first moved to London.

S P Every book lover needs to make a pilgrimage to the Edinburgh Book Festival at least once in their lives. I'm seeing Karl Ove Knausgaard tomorrow, and have got Alasdair Gray, Enrique Vila-Matas, Liz Lochhead, Lydia Davis and Ali Smith lined up (!)

Luke Omg. Give my regards to Smith. In the form of a hug, if possible.

S P Can we abduct her? Yes. Can I shake her at male American PoMo writers? Yes. Will anyone be sad? No.

The only downside to Book Festivals is you only get to chat with writers if you get their books signed - and that's a lot of money to spend on books, especially if you're not that much of a book-buyer in the first place. I really want to read Smith's Man-Booker nominated book, but it's like £15. Am I sad? Yes.

Luke Imma shake Smith at American-style capitalism based literature. It sounds like you should be doing the same on your side of the water.
