I hadn't read about neural Turing machines before, so the chapter was interesting by default. Typically for this book, it was superficial and repetitive, though.

Typos in formulas and spotty reasoning in derivations

Liked the treatment of back prop and vanishing/exploding gradients. Overall too repetitive and verbose, but vague in harder parts.

I enjoy that the author seems to strive for consistent formalism. Discussions are a bit verbose and very repetitive, but quite readable. Still, this introductory chapter could have done with some editing.
