“It was just a job to you all along, wasn’t it?” Her eyes filled with tears, and she blinked them away furiously. She would not cry in front of him. “You were following orders again. My father told you to find me and bring me back, and that’s what you did. My wishes didn’t make a damn bit of difference.”

“Why do you always call her the kid?” she asked, her heart aching. “Her name is Ana. Why won’t you call her by her name?” Caine looked at the woman wrapped in his arms, and his heart broke at the hurt in her expression. Every instinct yelled at him to leap out of bed and run away from her and the question that evoked so much pain.

He needed to control himself. To be thoughtful. Gentle. Lexie narrowed her eyes at him. The embers of desire smoldering in the depths of her dark blue eyes made him groan. “Lexie, I’m trying to do the right thing. You need to be taken care of, not kissed senseless.” Her gaze softened, and for a moment her eyes lit with a deep tenderness. Then she slowly pulled his head down to hers and took his mouth.

For the first time since finding out she was pregnant with Ana, she didn’t think about the consequences of what she did. She didn’t think about tomorrow, or what was going to happen then. She wanted Caine tonight more than she’d ever wanted anything in her life, and he wanted her. That was enough.

His Lexie was turning out to be one hell of a woman. The thought jolted him. She wasn’t “his” Lexie anymore. Hell, she never had been. In order to give yourself to someone, you had to know who you were in the first place. And by her own admission, Lexie hadn’t discovered that until she’d landed in Santa Ysabel. No, he and Lexie had had nothing between them but a powerful physical attraction.

“Caine?” she called. He reappeared next to the Jeep. “What?” “Be careful.” He stared at her for a long moment, then raised his hand to cup her face. Brushing his fingers along her cheek, he murmured, “I’m always careful, Lexie. I’ll be back.”

Coldness gathered in Caine’s eyes -- a wintry, desolate look she’d never seen there before. “How old is she?” “Two months old,” she said quietly. “Don’t bother counting, Caine. She’s yours.” He went still in front of her, his face shuttered and impossible to read. “You’re saying this is my child?” “I’m saying you’re her biological father, yes.”

Caine clenched his teeth. This was the last op he'd do with the Army. From now on, he worked alone. He didn't take orders from some Army lifer. He didn't work with other agents. He'd put no one's life in jeopardy but his own. He'd be responsible for himself. No one else.
