Ok, so a superior alien race is capable of controlling the weather, create portals to another planet, yet can't figure out how to prevent their machinery from overheating. So, the best solution is to out their portal in the Northern cooler part of the planet where thunderstorms happen infrequent, despite knowing that other regions of the has more lighting storms capable of powering their portal.
