Durkheim sees socialism as a call for equality. He is completely unfamiliar with Engels famous letter on the Gotha Programme, which was published almost 3 decades earlier. The Communist Manifesto speaks of the abolition of morality, incompatible with love of equality. Even though he cites Marx, among others, for his definition, he does not understand him.
He certainly did not know of Stirner, labeled a socialist.
