This is the singularity…derived from Schopenhauer, who thought that individual consciousness was only a temporary state of being and that death would release us back to unity with the blind, unconscious will that was the infinitely creative essence of all existence. The singularity purports that the spark of spirit in a mortal body that makes humans unique…will in the future be software uploaded into the cloud.

There’s no consensus on what constitutes a reliable source of information anymore. Nor does anyone seem inclined to agree on methods of inquiry that would result in people being able to sift through information and then agree on the facts. As far as I can tell, there are no facts anymore, only data.

Once we hunted, then we gathered, then we seeded the soil and created surplus. Excess freed us from the earth. Yet that connection to the earth had been the fundamental defining factor of life. When that was dissolved, there came religion. And when religion got old and God died, what emerged was modern man, who became lost in the solitude of his own heart. Lost! He invoked Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and the observer effect to argue that all data was tainted by the observer. Raw data could be understood only when given a voice, and in giving the data a voice, one encountered the problem of metaphor because the voice that spoke corrupted what it spoke about…data cannot speak for itself. Just giving people data in an attempt to influence them was a waste of time.

And if you were going to depend upon data to support a marketing thesis about a brand, you were going to fail. Because, paradoxically, increasingly, in the postmodern world, for those who believed in a thesis, or a proposition, or an accusation, no backup data were necessary, and for those who doubted a thesis or a proposition, all data put forward as support was suspect.
