I am comparing this book a bit with Rachel Field's Hitty, and while I am enjoying the story so far, I don't really feel that drawn into the story as I felt when reading about Hitty's life-story. With Madame Roalnd, I feel that I am reading "about" her, that I am more of an interested observer. I am intrigued by Madame Roland's life, but I am not really getting to know her, with Hitty, her story became my own story.

It's interesting how many of the ideas are actually surprisingly current and modern. The more bitterly repressed and bullied and the more uneducated and ignorant the repressers keep the repressed, the more violent and dangerous any revolt is likely to be. This was true in 18th Century France and is still relevant today.

Although I am still not completely drawn into the story, I am finding this an engaging and very informative read. Sometimes the choice of words seems a bit arbitrary and hit-and-miss, but I am really enjoying the book, and I find the future Madame Roland a very sympathetic and interesting heroine.
