Men, tending toward self-preservation naturally, and constantly in a state of war, although they want peace most, can only achieve peace when they are assured that all other men around them are subject to a strong, centralized power. Having given up their autonomy to that end, there is no deposing the Leviathan, and his rule is absolute; having covenanted for this assurance, any breach of the covenant is unjust.
