I.....I don't even know. I've been reading this book - and by reading, I mean trying to force myself to finish - since late 2013. It's not March of 2015 and I am still only halfway through, and still don't have the energy to continue plodding through this disaster of a novel. I was blown away by Fight Club and saw this in the university bookstore. My book nerd friends highly recommended the author to me (not that I wasn't already aware of who he was) and I had high hopes for this book, so I happily fished out my book vouchers for this. What a waste.
The idea of a 13 year-old dying of a marijuana overdose in itself is already quite far-fetched. I initially thought it would be a clever insight on the types of people that go to hell and the emotional backstories, and maybe some highly intelligent mindfuck. I did not pick up this book to read about a child sexually pleasuring a monstrous demon in order to survive - what even was the point of that? The language from the narrator herself seemed far too advanced for her age, not just lexically, but simply in the way she thinks about things.
I wanted to enjoy this book; I really did. Every time I try to pick it up again, I keep hoping it will get better and that suddenly everything will make sense, but it just doesn't. Would not recommend.
