It's the first day of high school for Melinda and so far she is alone. She was alone in the bus and so far for all her classes. During lunch someone spilled their mash patatoes on her chest and everyone laughed at her. There's a teacher who gave her detention for walking around the halls and when she went to her art class her tacher gave everyone a year long assignment that has to have meaning.

Heather started crying because of how badly she wanted to be popular but later on she’s on probation on being in the club called The Martha’s which is these group of girls that does volunteering, reads to little kids, donates,etc.Alot of people talk smack about Melinda. Melinda got in trouble for having bad grades and raised them up to a C and better for her classes. She is now going in her sophomore year.

It Melinda's & Heather's first peprally & they sit next to kids who work with Heather in the newspaper.One of the girls recognized Mel (Melinda) & got mad at her for calling the cops in the summer party & other people heard and called Mel an a**hole and then pulled her hair giving her a dirty look.They then don't go to school because of Columus Day and Mel goes to Heather's house & goes in her room for the first time

Racheal is selling candy cigarettes because she has asthma and can't smoke and she sells them to the exchange students. There's this girl named Heather who's always trying to talk to Melinda but she talks too much and just wants to be popular and hang around with the popular kids. Melinda questions why Racheal is so mean to her and questions why they were ever friends. Melinda meets Heather's mom and they talk.

There's this girl in Melinda's PE class that's really good in sports. Her name is Nicole and she makes everything so easy. The boys are always looking at her because of how good she is at sports and because they think she's cute. Melinda bumped into her exbestfriend Racheal and she ignores her even though she didn't do anything wrong. It's been a month of school and still Melinda has no friends and wished she had one
