I avoid reading books set in Australia because I feel, being Australian, I will be overly critical and ruin the enjoyment. But I like this series so I decided to read it anyway. One page in and it’s set in my state, because of course it is 🤦🏼‍♀️

Teal Hopes it works for you anyway. Maybe she did her research? 🤞🏼

Mir Well, her bio says she's from New Zealand, and I didn't notice anything off with her American settings -- good sign?

But I'm surprised because the ones I read were all in the same area and connected thru the characters knowing the lady who did the horoscopes.

I definitely noticed things wrong with her American settings. One of them sent me down a rabbit hole trying to figure out why in the world all the kitchens had benches in them. One, I could understand — decorating choices can be idiosyncratic. But every American kitchen having a bench? Uh, no. Turns out, "bench" is the NZ (and Aussie too, I learned) term for a kitchen counter. I remember also that she didn't understand the first thing about the American university system.

Sorry about the info dump. It's been years, but those things frustrated me so much that they stuck with me!

Mir Oh, yeah, I remember talking to you about the "bench"! I think enough Americans use regionalisms that I don't use that it doesn't bother me unless I recognize it as a foreign slang.

Teal Yes, The Great Bench Mystery. I love learning how the English language is used differently elsewhere – I just want it to be used correctly for wherever it's set. :)
