The Askesian Society in London, setup by amateur chemist become the springboard for scientific advancement

In 1783, the offshore island volcano of Reykjaneshryggur, Iceland erupted giving off 200 megatons of sulfuric acid aerosols that were distributed all over Europe by the North Atlantic winds. In London, an accompanying sulfurous smell soon settled everywhere, fouling the dry summer air. Leaves began to fall dead from trees, new illness began to spread and the newspapers began to appeal for explanations.
