Much as I am enamoured of AB's prose style and literary voice, I found the first 75% of this book to be overlong and quite dull. The story of his childhood, young years and war time, while essential to understand his character, is too long and over detailed. One senses that no effort was made to "cut back" here, rather like things had to be extended over two volumes.
