Stapledon is best known as an early XX-century science fiction writer, (see his goodreads capsule bio) but at a mature age he decided he wanted to give himself a good grounding in the essentials of philosophy from the early Greeks to his day. I think the book is greatly readable, and helped me terrifically trace the thread from classical Greek philosophy, through the scholastics, early French enlightenment, & onward.
