In the Preface, I find very interesting Nussbaum's assertion that the Greek idea of luck - "tuche" or "tyche" - is not so much associated with the idea of randomness, as it is in English, but rather with things that are not up to us, not in human control (which certainly is a connotation in English, but one often linked heavily to randomness . . .

I've had this book in my TBR pile for some time. I began reading another book, "The Ebony Column," which references this book many times in the introduction, and decided maybe I had better read this one if I want to understand The Ebony Column. As a Stoic, I am a little surprised that a book about ancient Greek ethics is so non-Stoic, and frequently anti-Stoic, in its foundations . . .
