The worth of intellectual culture is as ineffable as it is boundless, where the strongest argument for it, by its own account, amounts to an argument for nothing, I thought. It gestures to a space of possibility and spends the rest of its time filling that space with writing, thoughts about writing when not writing, and talk about doing when not doing.

[continued] This is the conceit of educated people, I thought, who believe that the lack of ideas is death, as Bernhard writes. They believe that in being educated, they will become immersed in ideas, although educated people are often drenched in nothing but their own conceit. [...] Roithamer demonstrates the destruction inherent in the pursuit of ideas, which our best, most enquiring educators, being intellects themselves, have brought upon us and upon themselves.
