There is no doubt that Yoga postures and breathing practice are therapeutic. But cultivating a healthy body has become an obsession with youthful self-image and physical perfection. Look at the ways our culture has superimposed its values on Yoga practice. The commercial operation and often the large profits seems at odds with some of the basic values of Yoga: nonstealing, nonaccumulation, and the wise use of energy.

A culture that hides, sanitizes, and represses death and dying is a culture afraid of its own mortality, thus setting up a world where heroic ambition, persona, and competitive self-interest are the most rewarded values.

Yoga works in terms of complementary opposites. If you want to settle your inhalation, spend time getting your exhalation very
smooth; if you want to find extension in the hamstring muscles, refine the contraction of the front of the thigh; if you want to find
happiness, serve others. Inside a forward bend is the seed of a backbend; in the midst of anxiety, we look for the calmness of the breath- it's always there

Though someone is plagued with pain, the desire to end one's life is actually a counterpull against
the identification with suffering. Suicide is the imagining of an end to suffering--an end that is certainly needed. Seeing more metaphorically, the desire for death as an end to suffering is a desire to make life more possible.

Whenever we create thingness, whether personal, animal, system, or element, we turn what is a process into a conceptual category. This gives us the illusion that something can exist separate from the act of perception. Life, ocean, or human are linguistic categories that give
us the feeling of separateness, because we confuse the category for the experience. When we name something, it begins to feel real.

I want the practices we explore to be on a par with what is possible in our everyday lives. This doesn't mean that we can just adopt practice
that "fits in" to our lifestyles. If the practices are to be vibrant and challenging, they must also interrupt the habits of everyday domestic life.

When I saw that I could be overwhelmed by life, I also saw that what was overwhelming was not the circumstance but what I did with the circumstance.

Yoga teachings remind us that what we are most reluctant to give up is not material objects but rather our cherished viewpoints.

So much of our self-generated human suffering is believing the language that we use.

I want to be truthful in unwinding my experience so that others can see their own lives in new ways. This requires a constantly shifting vocabulary.
