God knew breaking things off with him hadn’t helped her worry any less about him. If anything, she kicked herself for not taking more of an interest in his life. Her flat-out refusal to meet his closest friends because of their connection to the military meant she didn’t even have someone she could call to find out if Mitch was okay.

He slid a hand to rest at her waist. “You sure you’re okay? “I promise, I’m fine. You go do what you need to do. I’ll be waiting whenever you’re done.” His blank face slipped, and she could see a combination of wariness and hope. She slid into his arms and hugged him tight. He waited a few beats and his arms came around her with obvious reluctance. She didn’t care. They’d get there.

All you’re doing is borrowing trouble. Take it from me. The only way you can be happy is to live in the moment. And right this moment, there’s nothing wrong. Mitch is safe, I’m about to welcome a new life into the world, your business, your dream is about to launch.” Hal turned a gentle smile on Mandy. “We got this.”

She was so happy to share her passion, but hadn’t she been shutting him down any time he tried to do the same? Oh, she was aware how much he loved to fly, but any time he started to really go into details about missions he’d flown, she mostly plastered a polite smile on her face and took the first possible opportunity to change the subject.

He and Mandy had spent as much time together as their schedules allowed the last few weeks. They’d gone on dates, worked together on Miss Abigail’s house and she’d even brought him over to the shop she’d rented to run her plans by him. There had been lots of touching and kissing and time to think about what they’d like to do to each other.

The movie ended shortly after eleven, but Mitch was in no way ready to get Mandy home. Not even to get her into bed. That thought alone left him shaking in his boots. “Can we go to the beach or do you need to get back?” Mandy asked. Mitch smiled at the evidence Mandy was no more eager than he to end the evening. “Sounds good to me.”

Mandy plunked her head into her hands. “What is wrong with me? I go for years just barely putting one foot in front of the other, and in one day—heck, one afternoon, for heaven’s sake! In one afternoon I decide to move across country, sign a lease to start a business and accept a date.”

Did the woman have any clue the effect she had on him? No, he decided as she jumped up and carried her wet towel into the laundry room. She had no idea the thoughts going through his head. And why should she? He’d practically accused her of elder abuse within a few hours of meeting her. She couldn’t have a clue about his attraction.

She’s Miss Abigail’s granddaughter. The only thing I’m interested in doing with her is getting her to see how she’s been neglecting her grandmother.” “Yeah, you totally want her,” Cal said with a laughing snort. “That’s why you’ve been acting like you’re riding out an adrenaline high. You want her, and you left there all hot and bothered.” Mitch wanted to deny it, but he’d be lying.

Mitch read the words three more times, his finger tracing over the word “adopted” with each pass. For reasons he didn’t want to think too much about, having a total stranger voice her appreciation hit him hard. He took a couple deep breaths before he put the letter aside carefully and pulled the remaining items out of the box.
