...I don't mean this as a criticism, I like how the author went there with the heroine - she doesn't even try to heal, she's going so far as bargaining for a moment with a knife to cut. I just see this being a huge trigger for some.

This series needs to come with major trigger warnings for self-harm - cutting. The author provides trigger warnings, but I think she should have warned more strongly for this. This isn't a trigger at all for me personally, but I had a friend watch Sharp Objects and simply being exposed to the portrayal made her crave to cut - it's almost like a trigger for an addiction.
