This is a political book from 2007, Bush was bad and the Iraq war was divisive but this is before the housing bubble of 2008. Politics got more naked and uglier after that. the mask definitely began to slip off with the far-right and extremist Republicans started becoming overtly fascist. There was still a fig leaf of normalcy in 2007.
