In the Proudhon section, Marx begins by positing a phantom Proudhon animated by the Critics (Bauer, et al) and counterposes him to the real Proudhon (associated with the masses.

The back and forth of this battle can almost seem schizophrenic, but illustrates the diametrically opposed viewpoints involved. Whew!
