I am a big fan of Backman. His characters are often quirky yet interesting. This story has a bunch of them, including many strangers who find themselves in a hostage situation while looking at an apartment open house. Backman skillfully creates funny and sometimes poignant interactions between the strangers, while simultaneously introducing us to the father-son police detective team that is working on the case. The ending is brilliant.
