Margaret Mitchell's chapter presents an overview of John Chrysostom's understanding and use of the Sermon on the Mount. He sees it as an expression of Jesus' "new law", which is a continuation and development of the old law (the Mosaic one). That is, the Sermon on the Mount lays out the ethic for the Christian "politeia" (society). It is in this sense a new philosophy that excels over the philosophy of the Greeks.

If you ever wonder whether and how someone could love God and misinterpret Scripture, just read Augustine!
